This month I’ve joined in with SITS to participate in the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog challenge. It’s been really eye opening… not only am I trying to assess my blog from my readers’ perspectives, but I’m also re-evaluating my reasons for blogging.
I’ve been blogging for a long time… since 2008. That’s three years of words, pictures, laughs, and tears. Sometimes it has felt like the most natural, rewarding thing in the world, and other times it has felt like a chore I have to check off my to-do list.
I told Jason tonight that I feel like I’ve stopped blogging for myself and started blogging for numbers. I sit around and try to think up topics that my readers will like instead of blogging about something that’s important or interesting to me. When was the last time I wrote a “Dear Cooper” post? I stopped because I thought y’all found it boring. I don’t really blog very much about my day to day life. Why? I just don’t know.
In 18 years when my son is grown, I don’t want him to read this blog and learn how to make a peppermint wreath. I want him to read this blog and know what kind of woman and mother I was at this point in time. Is that coming across in my blog? I just don’t know. I’m not saying tutorials, recipes, etc. are bad – I just want to try to balance things out with more posts about me.
Do you, as my reader, know who I am? Does that come across in my writing? Do you feel I’m “real”? Can you relate to me? That’s what is important to me.
With that said, what you think of my blog matters to me. I want this blog to be someplace you visit regularly. I want to build relationships with my readers. Your opinion is important to me, and I need your help.

1. I have no idea how long it's been. I know that I've been reading since before Cooper was around. Probably since the near beginning. How I found it was you posted the link on SWC.
2. Every time there is a new post. I have you linked on my blog and I see your new posts in my dashboard too.
3. Your honesty. Some of the best posts were your pregnancy posts. You told it like it is and didn't hold back.
4. That sometimes it feels forced. Not normal Andrea coming through. I don't know how to describe it.
5. Crafts, Cooper, Dear Fill-in-the-blank, ones about Jason, ones about YOU!
6. Makeup posts. Nothing against you, just not my thing. Also, advertising/sponsor posts. I know you don't have them yet, but I can't stand those kind of posts. As long as they remain a small portion of an overall blog, I'll continue reading. When every post has a sponsor, advertisement, etc, I stop reading.
7. I'd like to think I comment often, but I know there are times when several posts will go by without a comment. If it's a makeup post, that's because I didn't read it. However, some times it's simply because I don't have time. :(

I try to comment on almost every blog I read. It's one of my goals this year because I know it makes people feel good! The worst thing ever is feeling like you're writing to nobody!

Almost always. Usually not if they are more than 4-5 mins though. HATE long vlogs.

I think you have a pretty good mix. Maybe a little more about your life. I love hearing about other people's lives! I like to know about your job, if you found a new church, did you make new friends, etc. I also love when you do Q & A posts!

I think it's really important to do both! If someone asks you a question then I think it's appropriate to respond via email. Visiting their blog back is nice too!

8. Do you watch blogs? Nope. But I don't watch much of anything online, I am around screaming, loud 3 year olds all day so when I get on the computer at night, I want peace and quiet.

I think you need to think about what you really want the blog to be.. Are you writing for others or are you writing it for yourself? If you are writing it for yourself then write about any and everything you want and don't worry about what anyone else has to say about that topic or their opinions.
Are you blogging to sell advertising and make money? Then you might need to focus on topics that will draw more readers and companies.
Those big bloggers who have thousands of followers and advertisers are doing it as a job. They make money off of it.
If you want Blogging to be fun then you need to just write about what you want. Maybe you could write another blog that's private just for yourself that are Dear Copper letters that he can come back to someday and read them. Like an online journal.

4. What do you like the least about my blog? Nothing... I'm really not picky. I enjoy your content, your font isn't crazy colors and you don't have instantaneous music so it's all good!
5. What are your favorite types of posts to read? I actually really enjoy your craft ones but I can see how you want your son to be able to read it one day. I went through that as well and I ended up making my personal blog (everything related to my daughter) private and keeping a hobby blog so I can still have my own little space to openly write about things I love to try, read, make etc.
6. What type/topic of post will you automatically skip right over? (For example, you hate Memes, or Brain Dumps, or posts about my child…) I really do not like sponsored posts when it is something that a person wouldn't buy or use on their own. Promoting a favorite site, gadget etc. is great... shoving it down my throat, eh... I'll pass! I have noticed a few of the blogs I follow have lately started doing more and more of them and it really turns me off. I think a sponsor post every now and then is fine but if a person starts doing more posts about "products" than "real" posts... usually I will delete them. I also just have to say that when a blog starts to advertise in weekly posts and all over their site for people to "Buy ad space" and they are supposed to be more of a personal blog.. blah! I understand people want to make money on their blogs but I am more about writing for the memories for your child and/or writing just because you love to do it or because it is a way to let out your thoughts! End rant ;)

I also was thinking if you really wanted you could restructure your tabs or add links on the side under your past posts so that if a person wanted to see just your "personal " posts, "beauty" posts "Memes" or just your "craft" posts etc. they could click right to them. That's what I did. Just throwing it out there :)

I've been reading for about 3 years or so. It was one of the first blogs I started reading. It seems like someone else linked to you and because I have chi's, I loved the name. I also love that you're from SC which is where I was born. I left there as a baby and haven't been back but would love to and love to hear about it, see pix of it.

It all depends on how much time I have. If I'm not working in school, I usually will read every post. If I'm working or in school, not as often due to lack of time.

I like that we're a lot alike. I'm not married and I don't have a kid but I feel like if I lived there (or you lived here!) and we met, we'd be friends. You keep things real and I can identify with you a lot.

If you started doing a ton of sponsored posts, I'd probably skip over those. But you don't and I thank you for that! I don't mind some here and there but don't want to read ONLY those kinds of posts.

As you can tell, I don't care much for the fashionista part of your blog. However, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the posts about Cooper or life or fights with DH (LOL).
I don't know if it will fit in with what you hope to accomplish with your blog, but I was thinking maybe you could do posts about life and then one day a week chose to be your "other day". Like Fashionista Friday or something like that. Go on about great makeup deals or clothes or whatever. That way it's not too much and I could totally skip that day if I felt like it.
However, I do enjoy your craft blogs as well, but would like it if you were like "So on Friday Cooper and I made a wreath" and then put a picture and then directions at the end (or similar).
