Show Us Your Life – Engagement Stories

Today I’m participating (late) in Show Us Your Life, hosted by Kelly’s Korner. This week’s topic is engagement stories.

The Angel Oak is a Charleston landmark. At 1,500 years old, it is one of the oldest living things in the East. It stands 65 feet high, has a diameter of 160 feet, a circumference of 25 feet, and it covers 17,100 square feet of ground.

Jason proposed on March 26, 2003. It was a Sunday, and we spent the morning together. I had a work meeting that afternoon, and Jason left to go run errands. That night we were supposed to go and have dinner with his friends, Rob and Jeri, whom I had never met.

Dinner rolled around, and we had a great time. Unfortunately, during dinner I got a terrible headache. When it was time to leave, Jason wanted to go to see the Angel Oak. I didn't want to go - I had a headache, it was dark, and the park would be closed. Jason suggested driving back to my apartment to get some Tylenol in hopes I would feel better.

We arrived at my apartment, and I went into the bathroom to get some medicine. When I walked out, Jason had a present in his hands. I remember thinking to myself "Crap, now I have to go!" It was a mp3 player. So, grudgingly I piled into the car and we headed out.

This is the point where I should tell you that I acted like a brat the whole way out to the Angel Oak. I whined about how dark it was. I whined about my headache. I whined about how long it would take us to get there. It is a miracle he didn't just call it off.

We arrived at the Angel Oak, and as I predicted, the park was closed and it was pitch black outside. We parked the car right outside the gates and left the lights on so we could see the tree. I was content to sit in the car while Jason admired nature, but that just wouldn't do. I didn't want to get out of the car, but Jason looked like he was about to murder me, so I did. I stood by his side, not really listening to him talk about how old and enduring the tree was, how beautiful, what an amazing example of nature, blah blah blah. Y'all, I just wanted to go home.

After a suitable period of tree admiration, he dropped to his knee. I honestly thought he needed to tie his shoe! I was spaced out, eyes darting here and yonder to catch a glimpse of the serial killer I was sure was about to spring out and kill us. I wasn't focused on my future husband, other than to wish he'd just hurry up so we could get the heck out of dodge.

I wish I could tell you what he said, word for word. But you know me - I caught a glimpse of the bling and my attention was focused on the sparkles, not the conversation. I do know he made a lovely speech about how he wanted our marriage to be like the Angel Oak, old and enduring, and for us to one day be surrounded by our family and children, like the tree is surrounded by its limbs. What a lovely sentiment! He had me at the bling.

How about you? I’d love to hear your engagement stories. If you’re single, how would you like to be proposed to?

Do you remember me asking you to pray for baby Cohen? He fought a brave and valiant fight, but has now gone to be with Jesus. Please pray for his parents, Megan and Brent, as they grieve for their son.

The way you told that story was sweet, but I have to say, that more than sweet, it was dang funny!! You are hilarious.
So you guys were engaged for just a few months, huh? Engaged in March and married in July? Wow!

How cool! I've almost been married that long too! :D
On a sad note, I found out about Cohen from Kelly's blog. Do you know specifics? I couldn't find any on the FB page, but LG told me you had some twitter updates. Something about a tear in the trachea and how maybe they knew it was about to happen? I am so heartbroken for them. I keep looking at Emma, bursting into tears, thanking God for her, and then feeling positively wretched for Megan and Brent.

Aw, how perfect is that! Minus you being a brat, haha just playing..I would of been a brat too! Wow, you guys got married really quick! My bf wants a short engagement he has already warned me. I do not think I can plan a wedding in a matter of few weeks/months.

How beautiful! It's funny how everyone I know says the same thing, they don't really remember what was said when the guy goes down on one knee because all we focus on is the bling! LOL! My hub asked me how I feel spending the rest of my life with him and I said "nah" and then laughed. He then dropped on one knee and proposed at the beach. It was embarrassing because there were people everywhere and I, too, was just staring at the ring. I think he said something about love and being with the right person. You know the saying - you don't necessary remember what people said but you will always remember how they made you feel.

What a great story, Andrea! Your engagement was so short! I am in awe of all the quick planning you must have done.

My heart breaks for Megan and Brent. In Cohen's short life, he touched so many lives and was so loved.

Love that story. I was such a bitch to Phillip the day I got engaged, I kind of regret that. Whoops. I think it is so funny.

I love all the pictures. That tree is amazing.

Justin proposed to me on June 4, 2005 on a carriage ride in Central Park. We had stopped in NYC to go see Wicked on our way home from a wedding in MA.
