I have a confession – I dye my hair. No, really, I do. You’re surprised? I find that hard to believe. My long-time readers have probably seen me in a variety of colors – y’all, I’ve done it all: auburn, black, brown, red – even blonde, which I refuse to share because it did not turn out well.
There was a time in my life where I was dying my hair every 6-7 weeks at $120 a pop. While I love and adore my hairdresser, there came a time when that just didn’t work for my budget anymore. I hopped in my car and headed to Sally’s to see if there was a cheaper, easier solution.
Disclaimer: Hairdressers are wonderful, talented people. I’m not telling you to discontinue your relationship with your hairdresser. But if you are hurting for money and need/want to dye your hair, there are other options than letting your grey show loud and proud.
Let me preface this by saying I’m not a huge fan of box hair colors. I find them to be very damaging and they don’t last as long as I feel they should. Sally’s sells “professional” hair colors – sort of a step above the box colors and a slight step below your hair salon. You won’t find Redken or Aveda at Sally’s, but they do have some wonderful brands. My favorite brand is Wella.
Let’s start with what you’ll need to color your hair. You’ll spend about $25.00 initially and will only need to replenish the color the next time you buy, which costs between $5-$10 for one tube.
- Applicator bottle
- Developer
- Gloves
- Plastic cap
- Hair color
- Comb
Pick out your hair color. I DO NOT recommend dying at home if you want to go lighter. There’s too much margin for error and you might just end up with green hair. Go to your super talented hairdresser for that. However, if you want to either maintain your current shade (and cover grey) or go darker, that’s something you can manage at home.
Tip: Get a cream, rather than liquid, hair color. Liquid is just asking for splotches and stains all over your bathroom counter and walls.
Ask the Sally’s employee what volume developer you need. I also use 20 volume. You *usually* only need a higher volume if you’re going lighter.
Hair color is either 1:1 or 1:2, meaning you’ll either do equal amount of color and developer or more developer than the hair color. Sounds confusing, huh? It isn’t. For example, Wella is 1:2, meaning I use one whole tube of hair color (2 oz) and 4 oz of developer. Other brands require one tube of color and an equal amount of developer. Read the instructions and it will tell you exactly how much developer you need.
Combine the color and developer into one bottle. Your applicator bottle has measurements on the side to make it easier. Then shake, shake, shake your booty to mix it all up.
I didn’t get pictures of the rest of the process because I do not look attractive while coloring my hair. But you know the drill, right? Apply the color all over your hair. I’d like to say I have a precise method of application, but I don’t. I start by parting my hair and applying the color along my roots in sections. Eventually I get frustrated and just kind of start glopping it on. I very gently run a comb through my hair to make sure I’ve got color everywhere it needs to be and then I cover with a cap and wait it out.
Tip: Have a friend or husband help you with the application. There’s no need to contort yourself unless you really have no other option.
Another tip: If you have very long or thick hair, you’ll need more than one bottle of color. Plan ahead and buy more than you need. There’s nothing worse than running out and having a halfway colored head of hair.
The directions will tell you how long to let the color sit. Start timing from when you first apply, and work as quickly as possible. I tend to leave my color on for the maximum time to allow for the time it took me to get the color on my head. Make sure you use a towel to get the excess hair color off your forehead, neck, and ears.
Hop in the shower and rinse the color out. Then shampoo and condition with a deep conditioner. This part is vital! Coloring your hair is damaging – there’s just no way around it. You can lessen that damage by using a great deep conditioner after you color and then 1-2 times per week. I love Loreal’s Feria conditioner. I purchase it at Sally’s. It’s the kind they sell in Loreal’s box hair color and it is fabulous.
Last step: dry and style as usual. Admire your gorgeous, silky locks. Make sure to come back by and share the results, ok?
My favorite color – Wella’s Black Cherry

I would look like a freakaleak if I tried to dye my hair. I'm terribly uncoordinated at those kinda things. Yours looks great thought!
Thanks! I use a box color...but it is so drying...I really like your Wella Black Cherry! I'm gonna try it next time I'm due for a color. Your hair looks fab!
Love it!
You look fabulous!! An expert home haircare job for sure. :-)
I dye my hair all the time too! I love the black cherry color!
i looove you in the black cherry....just stunning
have you tried henna? i have been using henna for five years now and i find it healthier for the hair....it's natural and as i have very fine hair, it also strengthens the hair.
coco's mumster, lilian
i like your hair too.....xoxo coco
Oh wow I love the black cherry color on you!
I am one of those hair salon type's that spends $100 but I have naturally dark red hair that I dye blonde. Yeeeah, not a good idea to mess with red hair at home. Bad bad icky gnarly things have happened when I have tried! Great post though that could really help some ladies save money.
Love love that color! I normally do boxed and havent had any problems with it drying my hair but now I want to go to Sally's and try that out!
You look great no matter the color. You are just so cute! Thanks so much for the info! Every time I have tried to do color on my own it has been a disaster. I guess it is because I go lighter. I wish I could do it myself! I get bored with the same color and am always wanting to try new things.
You are adorable!
XOXO

I've tried colouring my hair both at home and at teh salon. My hair simply doesn't like dye. You can never tell i've done anything and then my hair goes on strike and gets all dry and icky. I'm so jealous of people like you who can change your look.
I was in the same predicament, loved going to get my hair done, love trying new and different styles and colors, but the cost...after loosing my second job it was out of the question. I also dye my hair at home and have had great success. I definitely want to try Wella's black cherry, looks awesome on you! Will let you know how it turns out.
PS: Blonde was not so good on me either!
Your hair looks fab! I dye my hair too and was spending way too much at the hairdressers. Now that Cassie has her cosmetology license, I no longer have to pay those out of this world prices! But we go to Sally's and we also have a store here called Ariel..but you have to have a license to purchase from there. I think Sally's is cheaper tho!
Hugz,

What an awesome color!!! Looking good!
Popped over from SITS. The colors look great on you. Sorry I can't comment more specifically, I've been blessed with a color I like, although I wouldn't mind having my children's strawberry blond with highlights.
Congrats on the future baby. My brother was a submariner. My husband spent 26 years in the Navy...doing just about everything.
that color looks fab on you! I have highlighted my hair before but I hear you on the dinero factor. so glad to see your face again, now where is that hairclip and hairband tutorial!! :)
Since my mom owns a salon- I'll be honest and tell you MANY stylists use WELLA :)
But, also to agree with A- If you're going lighter, head into your salon!
I used to dye my hair as a teenager, but now that I'm married I just never have time! I've been wanting too though. :)
I stopped coloring. It gives me horrendous split ends even with going to the salon.
Your Black Cherry looks HOTT! I've been wanting to go dark...maybe I should try Black Cherry...hmmm. You look gorgeous!
Hope you're having a great week!♥
I completely understand. I used to dye my own hair. In the last year I found a guy in San Antonio that does a "quick dye job" every 3 weeks for $20. I don't like spending a lot of money to get my hair done. I'd rather have more clothes.
I love your hair! I didn't know you could by the Feria conditioner...I love that stuff! I might have to make a trip to Sally's.
Oooh thanks for the advice....I usually use boxed color...I will have to look into "grown up" color like you! :)
Thanks for sharing the tutorial. My father in law just commented on the fact I have gray hair. I think it's almost time to start covering. :S I told my DH that I will probably experiment with color when I HAVE to dye my hair! :)
I love the color and how shiny your hair is!
I'm loving your blog!
I just started a new blog and would love it if you would stop by! Eliza’s blog
Your hair looks great! I have never dyed my hair but my friends and I have highlighted it a few times :) We always do it at home..never crossed my mind to go elsewhere, I guess! ;)
