Nursery Inspiration

Before I found out I was having a boy, I was dreaming and drooling over little girl nurseries. I had visions of pink and green, polka dots, and stripes. I had it all planned out in my head and then…. I found out I was having a boy.

While I’m very excited about Cooper’s arrival, I’ve been in a little bit of a funk about not being able to create my dream princess nursery. I had originally thought that I would go for a nautical theme, and incorporate some submarine aspects as a way of honoring Jason’s military service.

Then I found this bedding set:

Wendy Bellissimo Safari Bedding

We’ve discussed how much I love animal prints, right? When a friend emailed me and told me they had this set at TJ Maxx for 50% off I immediately got my butt in gear to check it out in person. I love, love, love this bedding set. It’s the perfect “manly” animal print, don’t you think? It was only $60.00 for the bumper, sheet, and crib skirt.

I admit I got a little stuck there. What to do with the rest of the room? Y’all, Google is my friend. I typed in “safari baby nurseries” and look at what he found for me:

We’re going to paint on of the walls in stripes like you see in the picture above – most likely a chocolate brown, white, khaki, and green. The rest of the walls will be green.

Graco Victoria 4-in-1 Crib

My mom is buying us the crib for Christmas, and the rest of the furniture has been purchased second hand and will be refinished and painted white. I wanted to be frugal, and I really wanted to put my own stamp on the furniture, thus the decision to shop thrift stores, Craigslist, and garage sales for furniture. So far we’ve got a twin bed (for the tired parents and guests), a console/bookshelf we’re reworking into a changing table, and a rocking chair with a glider. I’m still on the search for a real wood chest of drawers.

Quick question – do you think the furniture will look ok painted white with the theme/bedding we’ve got picked out? I’ve wanted white from the beginning but now I’m worried it won’t look right.

I loved the murals pictured above, and I searched high and low for something comparable. I’ve purchased this set from Etsy… I can’t wait for it to arrive! I’d really love to frame them in bamboo but I don’t know if that’s possible. If not, I’ll hopefully pick up some thrift store frames to stain and distress.

Here’s where I need your help: what fabric should I use for the rocking chair/ottoman? How about the curtains? I’d love some ideas. I still haven’t found bedding for the twin bed but I’m thinking a chocolate coverlet and a animal print bed skirt and pillows. I don’t want too much animal print though…

If you have any other ideas for projects, let me hear them! I’d love your feedback.

Andrea I love it and I personally don't like the wood pictured in the picture but I would probably go with a creamy white b/c it looks off white in the pic. But if it were me I would probably paint a little bit of white and see how I like it before I went all the way...Congrads and best wishes!

That monkey hanging in the corner is the cutest thing ever! I love the bedding and wow, what a great price. We just put together our sons nursery last weekend and it's so exciting.

This might sound like an odd suggestion but I have a friend that used drop cloths for curtains, they are khaki colored and have a great texture that would fit in good with the theme you have going. Plus for 2 panels she paid like $9 at Lowe's! Just a cheap and neat suggestion :)

What a great theme! I think chocolate colored curtains would look great if you do green walls. Then khaki/cream rocking chair & ottoman. :-)

I can't wait to see how you put everything together!

Just my opinion but....adding chocolate to anything always make it better. Sounds like the room will look great.

The idea of using drop cloth fabric that the other poster mentioned is very appealing to me.

If I went dark anywhere, I think it would be on the frames of your artwork (that are so precious)!

I love the bedding and can't wait to see the finished room. I hope that when you're done that you will enter some pics in my contest!

I am such a sucker for animal print. I love the bedding and think the wall colors are going to look great with it. I think if you are worried about too much animal print, you could also use the zebra print as a trim for the curtains, etc.

Good luck and have lots of fun decorating!

I am doing a jungle/safari theme also and my colors are green and brown. Everything is coming together really well and most of my wall art I have made myself. Gotta love ETSY :) Good luck w/ everything!

Welcome back to blogging. We've missed you. I love the theme you've picked for Cooper's room. Cute name, BTW. I would cover the chair in a light green or cream color. That way you could use it in your next baby room or his big boy room.

Oh wow, I LOVE that bedding and the idea of the stripes and the colors you're using for them! Woot woot! Wish I could help you out with the rest of the decisions, but I just woke up and can't think straight yet.

That is a really cute set and I love the set you bought on Etsy!! I agree, a light green or cream color for the chair would probably look great! Have fun setting everything up =)

Hey girl! I love the animal theme and the murals are awesome!! They will be so cute. Ok, I have to be honest about the white crib. I noticed the crib is the one that changes into a toddler bed and probably a queen size bed too. I remember thinking Brady would be in his crib "forever"...he's 2 1/2 and he's been out of his crib for months. We're so glad we bought a used crib from a friend for $75. Another friend of mine has a white crib that changes into a bed and she's ready for her son to go to a big bed but now she thinks the white bed looks kind of "girlie". Just something to think about. The rocker, dresser, etc. can be painted, but I'm not sure about the crib. I know it will all turn out cute!! :)

oh the nurseries are great!

very cute! and "score" on the $60 bedding! You'll be tired of looking at it in a year anyway. White furniture will be just fine. Even if at first you aren't sure, you will get used to it. Fabric: if you go to Joann's website (the fabric/craft store) you can search by color, etc. I would try that and see what you get. I would suggest minimal animal print, though and stick with stripes, solids or even a check/gingham.

OK, I'm a slouch when it comes to decorating ideas - I'm no decor diva, that's for sure...but I did want to chime in and tell you that I understand what you meant about being not disappointed, but in a funk about having a boy instead of a girl. I totally was too, and now, I kind of can't imagine what life would be like if I had a girl. My little guy is now 20 months old, and he's Mommy's little boy. Congrats on your pregnancy, and enjoy it as much as you can! It won't be long before you won't remember what it was like when he was in your tummy...and when you'll be wishing he was back in there! :)

How cute!! And what a great deal!

I'd do something neutral for the rocking chair. That way, if you get your little princess next time, you won't have to reupholster it.

It's nice to see you posting again.
