Hey all! I hope everyone is doing well. I apologize in advance for this abbreviated post. I wanted to really quickly ask for positive thoughts for the husband - he's been diagnosed with swine flu. He started showing symptoms on Sunday, was swabbed on Tuesday, and we received the results yesterday. He's actually doing ok. He has been super congested and has had body aches and a fever, but has shown no other symptoms. He looks and feels like he's on the mend. He started Tamiflu last night so hopefully he'll be better in no time. Please keep him in your thoughts.
Now for the advice portion of this post....
Jason had to meet with a representative from the CDC yesterday. Both the representative and his doctor have recommended that I start Tamiflu as a preventative measure. My OB/GYN agrees and has called me in a prescription. However, Tamiflu is a category C drug, meaning "studies on animals have shown adverse effects and toxicity on fetuses" (safefetus.com). Regardless of what the CDC recommends, I really don't want to take a category C drug.
What would you do - would you take your chances with the swine flu or would you take your chances with Tamiflu? I'm leaning towards only filling the script if I start to show symptoms.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband and I hope he gets well soon! I hope everybody takes this swine flu seriously and takes proper precautions. Taking the medication is a big decision for you. I would take it due to you being such a high risk for getting the flu...with your husband having it and it being more prevalent in pregnant woman. I had to make that tough decision about taking anti depressants when I was pregnant. I took them and everything was fine. Trust in God and He will take care of you and your family!
I too am expecting and I talked to my Midwife and asked about getting the vaccine for the Flu and she couldn't advise me either way. It's a fairy new vaccine and not enough is known about it yet. I've decided against the vaccine but if I were you I would fill the prescription and keep it on hand so it's readily available if you need it. If you don't need it, even better! Best of luck
I wouldn't do it!! It's not worth the risk.. But it's your decision.. If you can go stay with a friend of family for a few days do that.. It's safer.. There are risk getting the flu as well..
I wouldn't get a flu shot either... It's a tough one, I would stay away for awhile.. and if you start to show signs, see what happens. You might not get the full on Flu it might be a milder case.. That's my opinion.. I'm not a doctor..
But I've taken a Cat. "C" drug before while pregnant and I wouldn't recommend it!
I would def. recommend picking the meds up and keeping them on hand. My friend is 19 weeks preg and started Tamiflu last Sat. night. She was clearly sick though. Do what you think is best, but it might not be a bad idea to have it on hand incase you get sick over the weekend or some odd time that you can't readily get to the pharmacy or get ahold of your doctor! (This was the case in my friends Situation so I drove 40 min down to Jax to pick up the meds for her!)
*On a side note, she went back and forth about the meds too, but her OB told her she NEEDED to take them because of how sicks she was.
I would NOT take it unless I was for sure showing symptoms! Its too scary, I am not even planning on getting the vaccine OR having my kids get it.
Google Japanese Students and Tamiflu
Ooh mercy.... that's sorta scary - isnt it? Just keep washing those hands... & keep Lysol around & wipe down anything he touches. Try & keep him isolated... just like you would any flu really...
Oh no - I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. I hope he starts feeling better soon!
The Swine Flu has been going around like crazy here. My friend and her whole family have had it and they are fine now. I would be cautious about taking the drug. If it were me, I think I would wait and hope for the best. I am afraid of taking anything when I am pregnant.
I will keep you and your husband in my prayers!
XOXO

Oh, your poor hubby!!
Only you know what's right for you. But, I'd recommend that you at least fill the prescription so you have it if you REALLY need it.
Big hugs, girl!
That's a tough call. I believe you have already answered it! Your Mother's intuition is already working!
Hope Jason's feeling better soon!
Stay healthy!

I hope your husband feels better soon. You have to do what is right for you and the baby. If the doctor says, it is safe then it should be. I know someone who is PG and is already taking it. I would not want to get sick that would not be fun.
Holly crap, Andrea- how awful! Like others have said, I'dfill it and then take if necessary! Hang in there!
Gosh, I hope your husband feels better soon. Tough call, but I am always more prone to NOT take medicine unless I absolutely must.
Hope you are doing well!

Oh A I am so sorry! I hope he is feeling better! I am with you. Hold off on the drugs till you know you actually need them!
I wouldn't take it. But I didn't take any medicine while pregnant. Not even aspirin.... Hope he feels better soon and that you stay healthy!
First, I hope hubby is feeling much better by now. My friend and her son had this a few weeks ago and the Tamiflu really wiped it out, although my friend had some side effects from the drug. Confusion, mainly. I think I agree with you... don't take it unless you show symptoms.
Justine :o )
Oh, poor hubby. Hopefully he's starting to feel better now.
Find out how long he's contagious and maybe you'll luck out of needing that medicine.

Oh gosh AndreaLeigh, I'm not sure what I would do in that situation...I 'll say a prayer for you and Jason!! I hope he feels better and you (and your baby!) stay well!
I'm pregnant too and I don't think that I would take the meds... not unless I really needed it. Heck I'm not even planning on getting the H1N1 specific flu shot... just the regular one, because the other hasn't been tested enough yet.
Good luck with your decision and I hope Jason feels better soon!
Thanks for the comment! Very cool to find a fellow social worker in the blog world! Nice to meet ya :) Your blog is super cute, by the way!
There you are! So glad to hear that aside from the miserable pregnancy related stuff, that all seems to be going well.
As far as the Cat C drug...if contracting Swine Flu poses no risks to you, then if it were me, I wouldn't take it. I'm not sure what the risks are, but I'm pretty conservative when it comes to taking ANYTHING during pregnancy, even though the largest risks come during the first trimester.
What does your doc say about the risks to the baby if you were to contract H1N1 and not take Tamiflu?
Prayers for your hubby!
I don't have an answer for you, but I will pray for you as I go to sleep tonight..and ask God's wisdom in it for you.
Oh wow, I sure hope your hubby is feeling better.
What a scary decision for you to have to make. I've never been pregnant so I don't know what I'd do. I'd probably do what most other people suggested - filling the script to have it on hand but not take it unless you really felt like you needed it.
Good luck to you, whatever you decide!
I'd be uncomfortable with this too. I say fill the prescription and then gather more info & see how you feel about it. That way you have it if you need it.
From what I've heard about the swine flu, it's more contagious than the regular flu. But it's a little less severe, although has been affecting more of a different group than originally expected: younger folks rather than older ones. The death rate is still pretty low though compared to the "regular" flu.
I can only suggest your pray for wisdom! Let your conscious and God be your guides. Whatever you decide. Take care and God Bless you guys.
I gave you an award. Stop by my blog for details.
