I wanted to share some pictures with you of my office door. I shared on Monday that my office is having a door decorating contest. This idea was the brainchild of my sole male co-worker (Steve, whose name has been changed to protect his ego), and his idea perfectly illustrates the differences between men and women.
First Steve wanted to make people pay to participate so that we could have a prize; the money we collected for participation would go to purchasing said prize. I explained to him that people (me) absolutely would not pay to decorate door, so he dropped that idea. Steve just kept saying "But we HAVE to have a prize, otherwise what's the point?"
We picked a date for judging, and Steve got one person to agree to judge. Next thing I know, I get an email from Steve stating that there is a deadline to decorate (Monday), that there will be three judges instead of one, and bringing up the idea of paying to participate once again. Sigh. Men. They always have to make things more complicated than they need to be. As a result of the new rules and deadline, many co-workers declined to participate, which is a bummer.
I knew I wanted to do an advent calendar, and the idea was originally to have little envelopes with openings at the tops, where you could pull the tops straight up. However, I would have had to make those cards, and since I'm a procrastinator, that idea was scrapped. Here's what I came up with:

The wrapping paper is very blinding on its own, and can easily give you a headache. I was joking with my co-workers that it is like those old pictures - the ones that just look like colors and swirls, but when you stare and relax your eyes, a picture emerges? The top is my peppermint wreath, which you have seen before, and I taped little multi-colored bows over my gold wreath hanger.
The body of the Christmas tree are cards that name one random act of kindness for each day leading up to Christmas in December. Some of the ideas include:
- Donating clothing to Goodwill
- Purchasing a phone card and donating it to a local shelter
- If you know someone who is suffering financially, mail them some money anonymously
- Donating your used books to the library
- Baking treats and dropping them off at the fire or police department
- Donating stationary and stamps to a hospital or seniors center
On each side of the door, I made a advent treat calendar with Hershey's Kisses. I got the idea from Joys of Home, and you can find specific directions on her blog. I included child-proof scissors in a little bag on my door for daily cutting (not because I am worried about my co-workers running with them, but because clients to occasionally come through out offices, and it is better safe than sorry).
What do you think? I don't really care about winning, but I am very pleased with how this turned out. This would be a really cute project for kids, and would look cute on a playroom door or even a garage door.

Girlfriend, I am in no place to give sleep advice. As per usual, when J is deployed, I'm still up and bloggin' at 1:30 am.
Love your door. I'd totally vote for you. Cuz your my friend, and your door rocks. This "Steve" must be a fun guy.
You have GOT to be the most creative person in your office. And I'm sure no one has put more effort into their door than you. Where can I vote?
This is adorable! And I am going to laugh when you win some awesome prize...
I love it!
I really should start volunteering again....
For sleeping, I am all about taking Melatonin. It knocks me right out, but I can still get up and function in the morning. You might look into that. And your door is by far one of the best in the building!

I LOVE your office door. How creative to turn it into an advent calendar! My secret to sleeping is.....well, I really have none. Once my head hits the pillow ANYWHERE I'm at, I'm out!
Awww, your calendar idea turned out a lot better then my make-shift countdown calendar.
Trust me!

As for sleep, sigh, what is THAT??? I take a quadruple dose of OTC sleep meds for what sleep I do actually get! I really need to go in for a prescription!!
Hugs to you tired dear!
I LOVE your advent calendar idea of small acts of kindness. I've been wondering what I could do (I was out browsing GNO's Random Acts of Kindness post and have been wondering what to do?) and I think the ideas you have are awesome...not to mention, the way you presented them is just the most damned creative thing I've seen in ages. I think we're going to do that kind of advent calendar next year for the little imp and forgo the chocolates!
Martha has nuthin' on you!
Your office door is adorable. I think you're going to win and I haven't even seen the others. :)
Sleeping... such an issue for me. I wish I knew something that helps. I know NyQuil helps but I don't recommend it. It can be very addictive.
What a great idea!! :)
Love the door!!! Very creative. Kind of funny how the only guy in the office came up with the idea... totally not the case in my old office.
To Ms. AndreaLeigh
I have read some of your posts. I liked your writing style. I would like to revisit the same.
If you like short stories and paintings, then a short visit to my blogs would be a good idea.
