Makeup, Part 3: Eyes

Let's talk makeup, shall we? We've covered foundation and blush so today it is time for eyes!

First of all, I must know: do you groom your brows? Do you tweeze? Wax? Do you have a unibrow? Do your brows resemble caterpillars? If they do, I feel your pain. I've been there. Check those babies out!

Listen, y'all, I know eyebrow maintenance is painful. But being a girl isn't always bling bling and fluffy rainbows. Sometimes you have to suffer to look beautiful. Invest in some high quality tweezers, and I swear, you won't feel a thing.

**That's a lie. Yes, you will. But I promise that the more you do it, the less it hurts. I don't even feel it anymore, and my gorilla heritage means I must tweeze every other day.**

I absolutely love my Revlon tweezers, and I've heard great things about Tweezerman tweezers as well. If you want to splurge, check out the Anastasia kit below - it has everything you need for serious tweezing jobs. You even get stencils, which are a huge help if you have no idea where you arch is or how to define it.

If you have sparse brows, or little gaps like I do (let's just say I went a little overboard with the plucking at one point) then you'll want to fill in with a brow powder or pencil. I actually invested in a brow brush and just use eyeshadow, but pencils are great if you have a steady hand. Whatever you use, just brush your brows after the powder or pencil application, and finish up with a coat of clear mascara to control those little crazy hairs that stick out all over the place.

This kit from Bare Escentuals has everything you need:
My last little bit of advice on brows: if you have the money, go and get your brows done at a nice salon. Your appointment will be about 30 minutes long, and the esthetician will wax and/or tweeze for you. Then all you have to do is keep up with her work, tweezing strays every few days. **Waxing at the nail salon, however quick and inexpensive it is, is not the same thing. They are just removing stray hairs, not defining or creating an arch.** I know I'll get some raised eyebrows (haha) for this one, but I also recommend not waxing your brows, at least not on a regular basis. The pulling and tugging involved is not good for the delicate skin around your eyes, and can contribute to wrinkles. And who wants those?
Moving on! Let's talk eyeshadow. There are so many different colors, brands, and finishes of eyeshadow out there right now. You have pigments, minerals, shimmer, glitter, matte... neon, neutrals, brights, smokey colors... MAC, Maybelline, Bare Escentuals... It can be exhausting.
I can't really recommend specific colors, because the colors of eyeshadow you should wear depend on your skin tone and eye color. I'm fair and have brown eyes, and I look good in neutral colors, greens, and purples. I look sickly in coppery browns, though. And I can't pull off a black smokey eye. If you wanted to send me a pic, I will try to match you up with some specific colors.

The first step with your eyes should be priming! Do you have oily lids? Do you have issues with your eyeshadow disappearing halfway through the day? Does eyeliner and mascara give you raccoon eyes? Prime, baby, prime! The absolute best primer on the market is Urban Decay Primer Potion. This is a great buy, because it will last you all year. **Just a tip: when you think you are done, pull out the little ring in the top and you'll have enough primer for several more months.**

For the most basic of eye looks, simply swipe a light and shimmery eyeshadow from your lash line all the way up to your brows. Again, the color you choose is personal, but think cream, champagne, or gold, and it is best if it has a tiny amount of shimmer. Stila Oasis, Starlight, and Dune are all good examples. If you want to take things a bit further, add a slightly dark color on your lid. MAC Woodwinked and Satin Taupe are good examples. If you want a polished look, add a crease color in a darker shad, such as Stila Expresso or Barefoot Contessa.

Does all those steps and choices make your head hurt? Then you need a Cargo's eyeshadow kit, for sure - it has the directions printed right on the shadow!

Here's another personal fav, Pop Beauty's Lid Bronzer. It suits almost any skin tone, and it comes with directions as to what color goes where. Foolproof! I use it almost every day.

Some other palettes I own and love... or would like to own and love:

  • You know how I told you I can't pull off a black smokey eye? That doesn't stop me from wanting to try, and BE's Rocker Eye kit can help.
  • This Stila palette talks to you, and it contains my absolute favorite eyeshadow shade, Kitten. You can't mess it up when someone is talking you through the application.
  • I really like Cargo's eyeshadow sets. The shadow is creamy and blends easily.
  • I love these Stila eyeshadow trios... all the shades you need for a complete eye.
  • Oh, how I love Lorac. The Croc and Snake Charmer palettes get used frequently at my house. You get four shadows and a blush, all in complimentary shades. Loves it.
  • The shadow brush in this Tarte set is worth the price of the palette. They've discontinued the set that I have, but the shadows go on like a dream. It's well worth the investment.

Don't forget MAC, of course. Or Milani (CVS and Walgreens). Or NYX (Ulta). Or Loreal HiP.

If you just want to go crazy and get a bunch of samples of colors to see what suits you, check out Pure Lux. They sell samples sizes of their shadows, as does Everyday Minerals.

I'm going to save eyeliner and mascara for another post, along with lips, since this has gotten so long. Don't forget to email me your specific questions, and I'll get right back to you!

Wow, Andrea. You're a girlie girl. Your blog photo looks fantastic and now I know why. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to make-up, so I'm feeling a little inadequate right now. Primer? For your eyelids? I think there's no hope for me. I'll try to make an effort though if you keep posting these great tips.

Oh, yeah. I DO pluck my brows, that about all I do because I have scary eyebrows. They're even scary when I pluck, but I like to think less scary now. I think I'll take your advice and make myself an appointment at the frou frou spa in town.

Thanks for the tips!

OMG, you're like the makeup guru! I spend most of my time getting ready in just hair removal alone. I pluck, trim, wax, and shave head to toe. (I am also part gorilla, I swear.) Recently, I was plucking my brows while distracted and plucked like 10 hairs in one place - okay not only was this a follicle folly of grand proportions, but it hurt like a mother.. I have since invested in some really good brow powder and some really good brushes.

Thanks for the shadow tips - I end up looking like Tammy Faye everytime I try to apply shadow. I usually don't wear eyeshadow because of it. I'll give it another go.

YOU. ARE. THE. BOMB!!!

really. you are.

i love this post and i clicked on most of the links and I want to buy almost every. single. thing. i saw. :P lol

i have brownish eyes, that sometimes can look green. and GREEN eyes is what I want. some where i heard... i think on TLC that if you use purple eye shadow it makes them more green. any truth??

also... I have glasses... is there any way, without going over board, to get my make up to stand out more??

I so love the idea of using a brow brush and eye shadow and then clear mascara, after your brush them of course... great! I have to try this.

my news years resolution is to take better care of myself and my apperance... not even pampering myself b/c these are things I should do just to do something for myself, to like how i look and feel better about myself. :)

this is a great start, now I know a few things that i have to buy...

PRIMER
clear mascara
and some new different types of eyeshadows. :)

i have smashbox trio eyeshadow but it is beat... i need to get a new one. :) or something different or both... maybe.

anyway... i have to read your other post on makeup tips. :)

thanks for sharing. :)

Oh, how I would love for you to do my makeup!!! You must look like a Vogue photo shoot every day!

I do pluck my brows...and I love it!!! Also, my 10 year old was getting a little unibrow last summer, so I started plucking her brows to get rid of it...no shaping, just de-unibrowing! Do you think that I'm the only mom who does that?

Also, I have olive skin and hazel(mostly green)eyes...would you suggest an eyeshadow? I have recently purchased a smokey Lancome shadow and discovered that gray is not really great for me...what do you think?

My fave makeup item is mascara...waterproof mascara...I can't live without it!

I went to Sephora on Saturday and spent an hour just playing with all of the eyeshadows. It can be soooooo overwhelming.

I wish you were my neighbor. LOL I would SO be raiding your makeup drawer!
I can never get a good smokey eye. No matter how hard I try. Maybe it's the shadow I'm using. Gotta get a better set!

I have to admit that i don't wear makeup and i let my eyebrows get outta control sometimes. Whoops!

Hey--will you come over and do my brows?? I've always wanted to, but don't know what I'm doing. then when i was in NYC, there were ads on every corner for "brow threading" buy I would have been chicken to walk in cold.
Well, I'll go back and re-read your post and see if I can figure it out!

Girl, I'm not even gonna tell you what I do with my brows.

You'd ban me from your blog.

Great tips, as usual!! I can't believe they make primer for eyes. Oh, the things we do for beauty.

I just posted about eyebrow grooming last week! I was recently turned on to "threading" and it ROCKS!

Yeah, so I just heard about primer...and just noticed that the freebie on Sephora's website is the exact primer you were talking about, but you have to have 100 pts in the bank and I only have about 25 right now. I'll so get some though...asap☺ I hate plucking my brows and I always wax, but I'll try to take it easy on the waxing...I definitely do NOT want wrinkles! This is a great post. Can't wait to hear about mascara and liner! Any good tips for brown-eyed girls? Send them my way☺

i was so proud of myself when i read about the eyebrows! i go to a very nice salon 2-3 times a year to get my brows "straightened out." i didn't know it was good for my wrinkles ~ i just knew it was good for my pocketbook :) i do keep up with it in between times, though. at least i'm doing one thing right with my face :)

OK OK....you were looking at pics of me on my blog and I get the subtle hints about my brows. *lol*

See, I have an allergy to pain. OI require general anesthesia anytime even mentions doing anything to my brows.

Seriously though...lately I have been mistaken for the Abominable Snowwoman. So um yeah, I think it's time to wax and time for a makeup upgrade.

Awesome info. Although I could very well go BROKE with all that stuff! *lol*

I get waxed. Actually, I can't stand facial hair and get it all waxed except my eyebrows, about once a month.

And I'm a mary kay makeup girl all the way!

I have a really bad habit of plucking out my eyebrows while watching tv. Then it's a bit of shock to look in the mirror. So, I actually enjoy plucking and it doesn't hurt at all!

I need stencils. Going to have to check some out.

This is an awesome post! You make me want to check out Sephora. I've never been but since SITSmas when that gift certificate was given away I've heard about it half a dozen times.

Way to go Saucy girl!

Wow, finally, someone who loves makeup as much as I do!! It's like a sickness or something, LOL. You have some great tips! Love the eyebrow part. Where do you find clear mascara though? I'm going to have to search for some, I think it would help!

Love your blog! So much fun!

Andrea, this is such a great post!! I am so bad at figuring out what the best makeup products are out there and I'm too lazy to try all kinds. I did the over plucking thing at one point in my life. No one will EVER see those pictures of me. Ha! And the colors of those eyeshadows are almost exactly what i use now but I have never seen that shadow bronzer! I want to find that one for sure.
